#21 – To DO

I’ve been praying for God to do some amazing things over the past few decades since He captured my heart, and it’s been awesome to watch Him exceed my expectations. Transforming me from a silent and fearful prisoner of war of sorts into a bold and outspoken blog warrior sharing my abortion story potentially with the world has been one of those moments.

One of my favorite verses is Ephesians 3:20-21, “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”

“To do” is such a simple phrase. It’s so general and by itself doesn’t lead me to much thought-provoking excitement. But the fuller meaning of this phrase in the Greek Lexicon is so much more exciting. It means to produce, construct, form, fashion, be the author of, be the cause of, to make ready, to prepare, produce, bear, shoot forth, to put one forth, lead him out, to make one do something, to act rightly, do well, to celebrate, and even more still.

It’s fun to re-read this verse with each one of these deeper meanings individually, and allow all sorts of thoughts and dreams of what God can possibly DO, immeasurably more of, than my little imagination can conjure. Let’s try one together,

“Now to him who is able to [lead him out] immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”

Here I imagine all of the wounded and captive silent prisoners of abortion-shame being forgiven and set free by the very power of God at work through healing post-abortion ministries.

Let’s try one more together,

“Now to him who is able to [cause one to do something] immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”

This one gives me great hope beyond hope. I heard someone share with our March for Life group last night that he is also pro-life but does not see how the law(s) will ever be changed. I can understand how he and many others could be easily discouraged, but with God we can know with certainty that He can DO immeasurably more than all we can imagine, including causing some man-made laws to be changed. What hope and joy this unleashes in me. As we continue to advocate and fight for life, this reminder that God is DOing so much every day gives me hope, peace and encouragement to keep going.

You can continue with this amazing word exchange exercise and meditate on what you see God preparing to either DO Himself or DO through us, His people. Either way, the end of the verse says it best and bears repeating, “to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”
